GOT CORKS?

Well I do…and lots of them.  Thanks to my wino vino friends and a local cafe’ I accumulated an absurd amount of wine and champagne corks for DIY projects.

I have to mention I am far from a “crafty” person but I like to decorate on a budget and turn trash into something useful.  This project is not only next to free, it’s eco chic and it takes no time at all if you’re a little on the impatient side.  So let’s get jiggy with some corks and a glue gun!

Materials:

  • Wine and champagne corks
  • Hot glue gun or liquid cement
  • Old picture frame
  • x-acto knife

Instructions:

1.  Take the glass out of the frame and keep the back. You’ll be gluing the corks on the back so make sure it’s sturdy and not flimsy cardboard.

2.  Apply the glue to the cork and place it onto the back.

If you have little gaps here and there just take your x-acto knife and cut little piece of cork to fill in the spaces.

There are several patterns you can come up with, such as swirls, herringbone or use champagne corks for a different look.  In my piece I used a couple champagne corks to act as knobs to hang things on.  It’s that easy! I almost feeling silly for posting a tutorial on this project, but I wanted to show you how simple it is to turn your garbage into something pretty.

Tangerine Margarita

Go ahead, say it out loud…tangerine margarita. Is your mouth starting to water? Thanks to my peeps, Jenny and David, I was reminded that February 22nd is considered National Margarita Day. So I said to myself, “This is a good excuse to buy some tequila and juice up a bunch of tangerines!”

When making a margarita, remember the 3-2-1 rule. 3 parts freshly squeezed juice, 2 parts silver tequila, and 1 part triple sec or Grand Marnier. If you like your margarita a little sweeter just add more juice and/or a couple squirts of agave syrup.

Tangerine Margarita

3 ounces freshly squeezed tangerine juice

2 ounces silver tequila

1 ounce triple sec

Directions:

 1. Salt rim of glass. Rub rim with a piece of citrus and dip into a shallow plate filled with coarse salt or for a blingy rim, dip rim of glass into blue curacoa, then dip into salt

 2. Fill your cocktail shaker with ice and add all ingredients and shake it.

3 Strain into a glass filled with ice and garnish.

Tips: You can salt rim up several glasses in advance if you’re planning on making several margaritas. If you don’t like salt, try sugar…I won’t tell. Enjoy!

Party-in-Your-Mouth Jalapeno Bloody Mary

May I offer you a bloody mary spiced up with jalapenos and cilantro?

This recipe needs to be made at least 6 hours in advance and up to 3 days before serving to allow the flavors to develop.

Are you entertaining guests for Sunday brunch or having friends over to watch the game?  If so, this recipe is ideal.  Just make up a batch the night before and you’re ready to go!

This is a take off from Emeril Lagasse’s bloody mary recipe.  His had too much garlic for my liking, so I’ve omitted that ingredient, plus I’ve upped the citrus flavors and added an extra kick with the addiction of Sriracha.  If you’re a garlic lover, go ahead and add a few cloves.  That is, if you don’t mind having dragon breath and burping it for days.

Jalapeno Bloody Mary

Ingredients:

3 cups tomato juice
1/3 cup fresh lime juice
1/3 cup fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup freshly minced cilantro leaves
1 to 2 jalapenos, minced
1 tablespoon Sriracha, to taste
1 tablespoon prepared horseradish
1 tablespoon Worcestershire,  to taste
salt and pepper to taste
1 1/2 cups vodka

Directions:

Throw everything in a blender EXCEPT VODKA and blend until smooth.  Adjust seasonings to taste and refrigerate 6 hours and up to 3 days in advance.

To serve, divide the Bloody Mary mix among six pint glasses filled with ice and divide the vodka evenly among the glasses. Garnish with lime and celery stalks or make up a fun garnish platter and let your guests decided what they’d like to nibble on.

Garnish Platter ideas:

Pear or cherry tomatoes
Peeled, cooked shrimp
Cherry peppers
Variety of stuffed olives
Pickled green beans
Pickled asparagus
Pearl onions
Pickled green beans
Cherry tomatoes
Pickled garlic cloves
Pepperoncini
Cucumber spears

I hope you enjoy this recipe!  It’s also good without vodka if you’d rather have a Virgin Mary.

Winter Seed Sowing and Dreaming of Dirt

Does your garden look like this?

Gardeners, do you ever have a happy dirt dream and then wake up in the morning, look out your window and see your garden covered in a thick layer of white mulch?  Do not be disheartened.  There’s plenty you can do to get ready for spring.  One thing I’m excited to share with you is sowing seed in the winter.  This project is economical and wonderful for those that don’t have a greenhouseSo grab yourself a coffee with Irish Cream and let’s have a winter garden party!

Wikipedia’s definition of winter sowing is a method of starting seeds outdoors in winter.  This is generally done with seeds that require a period of cold stratification.  The method takes advantage of natural temperatures, rather than artificially refrigerating seeds.  Winter sowing involves sowing seeds in a miniature greenhouse outside during winter, allowing them to germinate in spring.  Users of this method have had success in most hardiness zones.

With that in mind, let’s make some mini greenhouses!

Step 1:  Choose your seeds.  Wintersown.org has a list of seeds good for winter sowing and that will germinate well in your little greenhouses.

Step 2:  Rob your recycle bin.  Milk jugs, soda bottles, lettuce containers are all exceptable for planting in, just make sure they are washed and clean.  Poke holes in the tops and bottom of the container.  (use a sharp razor blade, be careful, wear gloves).  Here’s what I started with…Notice the, ahem, bloody mary bottles and water jug are cut around just enough to make a “hinge”.

Step 3:  Label your containers.  All you need in a piece of duct tape and a permanent marker.

Step 4:  Fill your containers with 2-3″ of potting soil and sow your seed.

Step 5:  Seal up lids and the cut around the water jugs/bottles with a little duct tape. Next, store the containers in a protected area that will be safe from pets and too much rain.

Step 6:  Wait.  If all goes as planned, the seeds will start to germinate as winter comes to an end.  As the days start to warm up and the seedlings start to grow, check to see if they need water and widen slits on top of the container for more air flow.  You don’t want to bake your little seedlings.  In due time you’ll be able to set your plants in the garden when your soil is at the right temperature.  Here is a helpful planting guide thanks to gardeningbythemoon.com.  For more inspiration check out these Google images on sowing seed in the winter.

If your are interested in sharing tips, trends, and asking questions about gardening, please join in #gardenchat on Twitter every Monday at 9pm EST.  Also, don’t miss the very special event called #supersowsunday Sunday, Feb 6, 2011 where we’ll be talking seeds while the game is on!

Happy planting!  Thanks for joining me in my FIRST garden party!
